In the spirit of my hope singapore, im sure there's something that some of us face.
that is, inviting the ever so skeptical friend.
well, ok maybe its me. but yeah i'd like to share how we all can reach out to this skeptical friend.
i was reading a book. its called the philosophy of religion.
it talks about 3 things, ethics, aesthetics and religion.
the underlying subtopic of this is of course, morals.
morals being values that is good, that is worthy to uphold.
telling the truth, forgiveness, etc..
aesthetics is the study of art.
what does this have to do with morals?
beauty is always in the eye of the beholder.
where one sees a long haired pale-faced lady who has a pretty high forehead, others see the mona lisa.
what i mean is that our judgments are always based on our context, our backgrounds.
The germans thought Hitler was great. the americans would've hanged him as a war crimminal.
remember this, people judge us based on their context.
we judge others based on our context.
so you got to understand where they are coming from, before you can see where they're going.
morals, religion, ethics.
ethics is this moral obligation to yourself.
while religion is moral obligation to the transcendence,i.e God.
we were made ethical creatures.
but we as christians are able to relate our ethical obligations to serving God.
and this is the beauty of it all.
we have purpose.
well ok i know all of you know this already, but this is just a philosophical way of explaining it to your friend.
i did have this debate with my friend (who by the way, is a religious skeptic and quite a strong atheist) and i was able to have quite a lovely conversation with her. i did invite her to church but she still has her reservations =( but i'm still praying hard.
yup. have fun digesting it and go on out to save 1 more for christ!
nil sine labore!
